What Is Amanohashidate?

Amanohashidate View Land

Amanohashidate is a sand spit about 3.6 km long in the northern part of Kyoto Prefecture, separating Miyazu Bay from the Aso Sea.

A sand spit is a landform created when sand and sediment build up at the tip of a coastal headland, extending outward in a shape resembling a bird’s beak.

Sand has accumulated over thousands of years to create this 3.6-kilometer landform. Together with the roughly 6,700 pine trees growing along it, the sandbar forms a remarkable natural landscape that has long been admired.

It is one of the Three Scenic Views of Japan and a designated Special Place of Scenic Beauty. A classic way to enjoy it is matanozoki, looking at the view upside down through your legs from one of the surrounding observation points.

MATSUMURA
Writer at JAPANOPIA Editorial Team
I am a writer with six years of experience. Born in Hyogo, I traveled to the U.S., India, Thailand, and Taiwan during my student years, experiencing and enjoying cultural differences between Japan and other countries.
Inspired by Kyoto’s tea caddy maker Kaikado and paper-cutting artist Teppei Hayakawa, whose work helps preserve traditional techniques, I developed a deep interest in Japanese craftsmanship.

Now, I focus on uncovering lesser-known attractions and locally loved establishments in Kyoto, Shiga, and Hyogo, driven by a passion to share them with more people. My goal is to provide detailed, authentic information through research and interviews.

I believe history, traditional culture, and uniquely Japanese customs become even more fascinating when you understand their background. Every day, I write articles with the hope that readers will feel inspired to visit and experience these places for themselves.
