The Akamatsu is a café-style sightseeing train that runs twice daily (four trips total) between Amanohashidate and Nishi-Maizuru. Onboard, you can enjoy local treats such as Tango Coffee, Tango Usakuma cakes, Amanohashidate wine, and regional craft beer—all while gazing out at the beautiful coastal scenery.

One of the ride’s highlights is a brief photo stop at Nagu Coast, often said to offer the best views on the entire Kyoto Tango Railway line. It’s the perfect chance to capture the beauty of Kyoto’s seaside landscape.

The train also slows down as it crosses the Yura River Bridge, the longest railway bridge in Kyoto Prefecture. Here, you’ll feel as if you’re gliding across the ocean—a scene that feels straight out of the film Spirited Away.

With its warm wooden interiors and relaxed pace, the Akamatsu offers a travel experience that turns the journey itself into a treasured memory.

The Morning Course includes a 35-minute stop at Ōe Station, where you can browse a nearby shop offering unique souvenirs inspired by Japanese oni (folklore demons)—a local specialty of the area.

On both the Lunch and Sweets Courses, the train passes two of the most scenic spots along the Kyoto Tango Railway: Nagu Coast and the Yura River Bridge. These routes are a must for anyone looking to take in the nostalgic charm of the countryside and the stunning beauty of Wakasa Bay.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the Lunch Course menu, one of the highlights of the season.

Spring–Summer 2025 Lunch Course

The Spring–Summer 2025 Lunch Course features a playful and elegant menu themed around the Urashima legend, which is tied to the famous boathouses of Ine near Amanohashidate. One highlight is a dish served in a “tamatebako” (treasure box), inspired by the tale.

The course also includes a variety of regional specialties, such as simmered dishes and sashimi made with seasonal ingredients from the Tango area, as well as Tango-style bara sushi, a traditional local dish.

In contrast, the 2024 Spring–Summer Lunch Course was created by the creative restaurant Anson Benir, located at the foot of Amanohashidate. That menu followed a full fine-dining format, featuring an appetizer, soup, fish dish, meat dish, dessert, and coffee—worthy of any top-tier restaurant.

Although the content changed significantly from 2024 to 2025, both menus share a common theme: a deep commitment to local and seasonal ingredients.

If you enjoy meals rooted in regional culture, history, and flavor—and want to eat your fill of fresh, local delicacies—this course is made for you.

Just like the spring–summer schedule, the Morning Course includes a 35-minute stop at Ōe Station, making it a great choice for those interested in the legendary oni (demons) of Ōeyama and the tale of Shuten Dōji.

The Lunch and Local Sake & Small Plates Courses follow the same route through Nagu Coast and the Yura River Bridge, but the scenery along Wakasa Bay takes on a different character in autumn and winter.

In spring and summer, Wakasa Bay offers vibrant blue waters and a refreshing coastal breeze. In contrast, the autumn–winter view is striking in its own way—deep, cobalt waters and a moody atmosphere that evoke a quiet, nostalgic beauty.

We highly recommend experiencing both seasons to fully appreciate the contrast.

Next, let’s take a closer look at the Local Sake & Small Plates Course—a highlight of the autumn–winter season.

Dishes included boiled red snow crab, sashimi made from fresh local fish, and a rich grilled seafood dish topped with crab miso. One standout item was the deep-fried oyster served with savory dashi broth, offering a warm and comforting bite ideal for the season.

For those who like to enjoy a hearty meal with their drinks, the menu also featured a creative twist on a Tango regional favorite: the Tango Bara Sushi Roll, made with sweet-and-savory minced mackerel—a delicious nod to traditional local flavors.

We can’t wait to see what culinary delights the 2025 Autumn–Winter Course will bring!

With six years of writing experience, I was born in Hyogo and, during my student years, traveled to the U.S., India, Thailand, and Taiwan, enjoying the cultural differences with Japan.
Inspired by Kyoto’s tea caddy maker Kaikado and paper-cutting artist Teppei Hayakawa, who both preserve traditional techniques through their work, I developed a deep interest in Japanese craftsmanship.

Now, I focus on uncovering hidden spots and beloved local establishments in Kyoto, Shiga, and Hyogo, driven by a passion to share them with more people. My goal is to provide detailed, authentic information through research and interviews.

I believe history, traditional culture, and uniquely Japanese customs become even more fascinating when you understand their background. Every day, I write articles with the hope that readers will feel, “I want to go there!” or “I want to experience that!”
