Sesshu-an is the perfect place to savor freshly caught seafood from the Amanohashidate area. The restaurant offers sushi, traditional kaiseki cuisine, crab dishes, and fugu (pufferfish), all prepared using carefully selected seasonal ingredients.

Depending on the time of your visit, you can enjoy a variety of fresh local fish at their peak.

The menu features daily set meals, sushi set meals, and multi-course kaiseki options, making it suitable for a wide range of occasions—from celebratory gatherings to business meetings—at both lunch and dinner.

The lunch recommendation is the Sushi Set Meal, which includes five pieces of sushi, three small side dishes featuring grilled and simmered items, and chawanmushi (savory egg custard).

For dinner, the Sushi Course is highly recommended. It features 13 pieces of sushi along with a variety of seasonal side dishes prepared with fresh ingredients.

The lunch Sushi Set Meal is priced at ¥3,500, while the dinner Sushi Course costs ¥8,500. Although the prices are on the higher side, the sushi’s exceptional freshness—something you won’t find elsewhere—makes it well worth it.

The restaurant offers both table seating and private rooms, but we highly recommend choosing a counter seat. Since the restaurant is located directly facing Amanohashidate, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the scenic sandbar through the large windows behind the counter.

The collaboration of Amanohashidate, the surrounding mountains, and the sea creates a breathtaking view that looks just like a painting.

Make a Reservation to Avoid Crowds!
There are 8 counter seats, two 6-person tables, and one private room that accommodates up to 12 guests. While walk-ins are accepted, the restaurant tends to get busy, so reservations are essential on weekends.

For kaiseki (traditional multi-course) menus, reservations must be made in advance due to ingredient procurement. If you need to change your reservation, be sure to contact the restaurant by 12:00 noon on the business day before your visit.

Please note that credit cards are not accepted, so don’t forget to bring cash.

Amanohashidate Yūsai: Hidden Gem for Creative Cuisine

“amano-hashidate Yusai” is an auberge that combines both a restaurant and accommodation.
They offer a unique style of cuisine called “Kyo Shinkan Washoku” (literally “Kyoto New Sensation Japanese Cuisine”), prepared with the utmost care using ingredients sourced from the surrounding area — freshly caught seafood from nearby fishing ports, locally raised beef and vegetables from the Tango region, carefully selected rice, and even meticulously chosen seasonings such as salt and vinegar.

The term “Kyo Shinkan Washoku” was coined from the culinary philosophy of the owner-chef Yasuhiro Kishiwada. It expresses his commitment to pursuing deliciousness without being bound by fixed culinary conventions.

Rather than sticking to a single genre, he freely draws on techniques from Japanese, Italian, French, Chinese, and other cuisines to create a completely original style. In other words, there is no fixed category — just an unwavering focus on bringing out the best of Tango’s seafood, meat, and vegetables.

For that reason, the restaurant doesn’t limit itself to any single genre. By skillfully incorporating cooking techniques from Japanese, Italian, French, Chinese, and other cuisines, they have created their own unique culinary style.

Every carefully crafted dish is truly exceptional.

The menu features a selection of exquisite dishes that highlight the natural flavors of seasonal ingredients. For example, “Slow-Roasted Tango Kuroge Wagyu Shikinbo Marinated in Shio Koji.”* The locally raised Tango Kuroge Wagyu is marinated in shio koji and slowly roasted to perfection, then served with “ume-garlic”—a special garlic pickled in plum vinegar. This ume-garlic is first soaked in water for a month and then marinated in plum vinegar for another month, eliminating the typical garlic odor while enhancing its mellow flavor.

Other creative dishes include “Firefly Squid and Spanish Mackerel Smoked with Roasted Green Tea, Japanese-Style Tomato Pasta” and “Soy Milk Gelato with Cream Cheese and White Miso, Served with Red Rice Sake Lees Sauce.” Each dish is meticulously crafted to offer a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

* Shikinbo: A lean cut from the outer thigh of the cow’s hind leg. It has well-developed muscles and a firm texture, making it ideal for those who enjoy flavorful red meat with minimal fat.

A charming establishment with a warm interior and beautiful scenery.”

The interior is thoughtfully designed with carefully selected décor and lighting, creating a calm atmosphere that blends seamlessly with its quiet surroundings. The building is built with accessibility in mind, minimizing steps and level differences for a fully barrier-free environment.

Except for a designated smoking area, the entire restaurant is non-smoking, making it a comfortable place for both smokers and non-smokers alike. Through the windows, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Amanohashidate, adding to the gentle and refined experience.

Because it’s not a major tourist spot, this hidden gem is beloved by locals—so much so that many say, “We’d really like to keep this place a secret!”

MATSUMURA
Writer at JAPANOPIA Editorial Team
With six years of writing experience, I was born in Hyogo and, during my student years, traveled to the U.S., India, Thailand, and Taiwan, enjoying the cultural differences with Japan.
Inspired by Kyoto’s tea caddy maker Kaikado and paper-cutting artist Teppei Hayakawa, who both preserve traditional techniques through their work, I developed a deep interest in Japanese craftsmanship.

Now, I focus on uncovering hidden spots and beloved local establishments in Kyoto, Shiga, and Hyogo, driven by a passion to share them with more people. My goal is to provide detailed, authentic information through research and interviews.

I believe history, traditional culture, and uniquely Japanese customs become even more fascinating when you understand their background. Every day, I write articles with the hope that readers will feel, “I want to go there!” or “I want to experience that!”
